The “Why’s” Behind the Wise

Today’s Through the Bible Reading: Proverbs 25 - 27

Today’s reading is an excerpt from my new book, Jesus, Day by Day. Hope you enjoy!

“It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.” Proverbs 25:2

Were you ever told as a kid, “Don’t ask why”? Proverbs suggests quite the opposite approach to life, implying by its very nature that it’s the “whys?” that make us wise. Wisdom comes from understanding, and understanding comes from examination and comprehension. A person can have a knowledge of God’s ways and honor those standards—which is good—but as we take up God’s Word, search the Scriptures, and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the “whys,” we become wise.

“Through [skillful and godly] wisdom a house [a life, a home, a family] is built, And by understanding it is established [on a sound and good foundation],” Proverbs 24:3 Amp

Jesus often taught in parables that required His disciples to probe to discern their meanings. This provoked deeper thinking and sparked further questions (Matt. 15:15; Luke 8:9). The disciples would sit and listen as Jesus gave them a full explanation in private (Mark 4:33–34).

What rich fellowship the disciples experienced as a result of their questions! And their answers came straight from Jesus, Wisdom Himself.

Dear friend, if you’re anything like me, you might be thinking you could stand to be a bit wiser. Well, I have good news for both of us: our Lord promises to answer when we call and to give wisdom to those who ask.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” James 1:5

The “whys” make us wise, so keep reading, keep studying, keep contemplating, and keep digging into this divine truth we’re so privileged to explore. As you do you’ll gain wisdom anew—I guarantee you!
