A Glimpse of God’s Glory
Today’s Through the Bible Reading: 2 Kings 15:17–29; Isaiah 6; 2 Chronicles 26:22–28:21
Abbreviated / Highlights: Isaiah 6
"…I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.” Isaiah 6:1
A glimpse of God cannot help but leave a person completely humbled. Isaiah “saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted.” His reaction was one filled with complete humility.
“Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.” Isaiah 6:5
Isaiah acknowledged his total unworthiness in light of God’s great glory. His guilt, in that moment, was a palpable reality to him. He could see his sin and feel the burden and weight it brought. At the mercy of God Almighty, Isaiah confesses his sin and the sin of his people, after which, God touched and cleansed him.
“Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand…And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.” Isaiah 6:6-7
It was after God touched Isaiah that he was in a position to hear God’s call and respond with the most willing heart: “Here am I. Send me” (Isa. 6:8). Isaiah knew who he was without God’s touch – an unclean and unworthy man. He had undergone God’s cleansing and was thereafter willing to do whatever it was God was calling him to.
Today, like Isaiah did, you can see God’s glory – it is found in Jesus Christ! He is the glory of God made manifest to mankind (John 1:14). And like Isaiah’s mouth was cleansed by the coal, the Bible tells us that if our mouths confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). It’s then that we’re cleansed and ready for service.
