God’s Faithfulness Despite Our Fickleness
Today’s Through the Bible Reading: 2 Kings 2–3; 2 Kings 8:16–29; 2 Chronicles 21:4–20
Abbreviated Reading: 2 Kings 2-3; 2 Kings 8:16-29
God is faithful to keep His promises. He is gracious and reassures our often doubting hearts. He demonstrates His power so our trust is renewed. And He is merciful to hear and answer our prayers. We find examples of all of these attributes in today’s reading which is full of fascinating accounts of God’s power, faithfulness, provision, and unfailing love – exactly the sorts of things we need to re-energize our fickle faith.
Take, for example, Jehovah’s faithfulness to Judah. God made a promise to David that David’s descendants would remain on the throne of Israel. Despite Judah turning away from their Lord, He did not turn away from them. God remembered His promise to David, and, with supernatural patience, preserved Judah.
Nevertheless, for the sake of His servant David, the Lord was not willing to destroy Judah. 2 Kings 8:19 NIV
God shows you and me the same sort of mercy through His Son, Jesus. Because of Christ’s atoning blood, God no longer looks at us and sees our shortcomings, but instead, He sees us clothed in Christ’s perfection.
Consider next the men Elijah and Elisha. God used these two miracle workers to miraculously minister to those in Israel who loved the Lord - and to warn those who did not. Both provision and admonition are blessings, and God used these prophets to do both. So too it is with you and me – His Word speaks both comfort and conviction exactly when we need them.
Finally, we see an example of the power of praise when seeking God's will (2 Kings 3:15). And perhaps here we see where Paul and Silas got the idea to praise the Lord while patiently waiting their release from prison (Acts. 16:16-40).
There's so much to glean from today's reading. God’s Word speaks to every situation and gives us wisdom for every circumstance in life. All we have to do is read it - cover to cover. So keep reading, my friend, and let your faith be renewed.
