Abraham’s Story Compared to Your’s
Today’s Through the Bible Reading: Genesis 11:27–14:24
Abbreviated Reading: Genesis 12:1-8
We just finished reading through Job and are back in Genesis. We're picking up with Abraham's story and will be greatly encouraged as we see how God so graciously led Abraham on his life's journey. Our fickle, doubting hearts need reassurance and that my friends is EXACTLY what we'll find in the account of Abraham's life. Here God gives us a window into how He leads His kids (that's you and me). Through Abraham's story, God gives us an example of His lovingkindness, longsuffering, gentleness, and persistence. From start to finish, God is orchestrating a grand plan.
There are countless similarities between Abraham's story and our own as Christians. Consider the following:
God called Abram to leave his homeland and go to a new land. (Gen 12:1)
God called us out of the world, our homeland, into a new and living way.
And you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world... But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us. Eph 2:1-4
God gave Abram promises that he could hold on to throughout the journey.
I will make you into a great nation and will bless you...and all peoples on the earth will be blessed through you. Gen 12:2, 3
God has given us great and precious promises.
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2 Peter 1:4
Abram had to pack up and leave his country and follow where God was calling. (Gen 12:4)
We are on a journey and can stop and plop or pick up our cross and follow precious Jesus.
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Matt 16:24
God's grace covered Abram's pitfalls and mistakes along the way. (Gen 12:17)
We are saved by grace and by grace He will finish the work He began!
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Eph 2:8-9
When Abram was afraid, God reassured him. - "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward." Gen. 15:1
When we are afraid, God reassures us!
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27
God's Word contains endless treasure and encouragement for our daily Christian lives. As God guided His friend Abraham, so He leads and guides us, His pearl of great price (Matt 13:46).
