Want A Clean Conscience?
A Picture of Jesus’s Forgiveness in Leviticus
Today's Through the Bible Reading: Leviticus 5 -7
Abbreviated Reading: Leviticus 6:1-18
“…It is a guilt offering.” Leviticus 5:15 niv
Need a clean conscience? We all do! Sin brings guilt, and guilt causes a sick and heavy heart. A sensitive conscience is a gift from God. It keeps us from sin that would otherwise cause heartache and bring death.
For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. 1 John 3:20
Today’s reading is all about the guilt offering and atonement (Lev 5:15, 19).
Atonement means "at-one-ment." As a result of Christ’s death on the cross we have been reconciled to God; i.e., debts paid, sacrifice made, wrongs made right, friendship and fellowship restored. (Hebrews 9:14)
In today’s through the Bible reading we’re reminded of our greatest need – FORGIVENESS. In the Old Testament, God had Israel offer sin and guilt sacrifices. These were types and pictures that looked forward to Jesus, who was the perfect sacrifice. Israel had to offer their sacrifices year after year, day after day. But Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice, the absolute fulfillment of all these types and shadows. He finished the work and His blood cleanses us completely.
For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come…can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. ...But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year... For by one offering He [Jesus] has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. Hebrews 10:1, 3, 14
We broke the law and owed a penalty we could not pay (Isa 64:6; Rom 3:20-23, 6:23; Gal 3:11; Jas 2:10). But, Jesus paid the penalty for us (Rom 4:25, 5:9; Gal 2:16, 3:13; Titus 2:14). God forgives us, declaring us not guilty of sin (Isa 61:10; Acts 13:39; Rom 3:24-26).
The record that detailed our sins is destroyed (Ps 103:12; Isa 43:25; Acts 3:19; Col 2:14). The law, as seen here in Leviticus has been completely fulfilled and satisfied. Thank you Jesus!
