The Glorious New Covenant
Today’s Through the Bible Reading: Jeremiah 30-31; Ezekiel 26
“…I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel…” Jeremiah 31:31
Jeremiah chapter 31 contains perhaps the most significant key to unlocking our understanding of the New Covenant as it relates to God fulfilling the Old Covenant. Remember, Jesus is the very essence of the Scriptures. The Old Testament points to Him and the New Testament reveals Him. He can be found on every page and in every story. If we look for Him, we will find Him. After all, He is the Word made flesh (John 1:14). But in Jeremiah chapter 31, we don’t have a shadow or a colorfully painted picture of our prophesied Savior. Rather, Jeremiah 31 is God Himself, plainly giving us the promise of the glorious New Covenant.
“I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be my people…they will all know me…I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Jeremiah 31:33-34 NIV
In the Old Testament, God revealed His plan of redemption through a series of covenants: the Adamic Covenant, the Abrahamic Covenant, the Mosaic Covenant, and the Davidic Covenant – all of which pointed to the promised Messiah!
Which brings us to Jeremiah 31, where we find the Lord literally spelling out for us His plans for a New Covenant – where God’s law would no longer be written on tablets of stone but instead on our hearts, by His Spirit!
Jesus Christ ushered in the New Covenant with His atoning sacrifice on the cross. He extended His Covenant to us with the bread and the cup saying: “This cup is the New Covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” (Luke 22:20).
Under this New Covenant, He has promised to write His law on our hearts. He is our God and we are His people. This is God’s New Covenant with me and with you, just like He promised to do!
