God Saves

By many of by few

Today’s Through the Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 14; 1 Chronicles 8:1–9:1

Abbreviated Reading: 1 Samuel 14

“…it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.”1 Samuel 14:6

Is your heart filled with anticipation of what God can accomplish in your life? Jonathan’s was. In today’s reading we find Jonathan positioning himself for victory out of a fervent faith in his Heavenly Father. The wicked Philistines that Jonathan needed to take out, had camped atop two cliffs, one to the north and one to the south (1 Sam. 14:4-5). But as Jonathan saw the seemingly impossible situation, he believed that if God was with him nothing could stand against him. With eyes of faith like that, even an uphill battle is an opportunity for victory.

If they say to us, 'Wait until we come to you'; then we will stand in our place and not go up to them. “But if they say, 'Come up to us,' then we will go up, for the LORD has given them into our hands; and this shall be the sign to us. 1 Samuel 14:9, 10 NIV

God was with Jonathan that day. He and his armor-bearer scaled the cliffs, fearlessly faced their foes, and were victorious as they single-handedly defeated Israel’s enemy. God doesn’t need tons of tanks or awesome armies to accomplish His purposes – just a willing heart and eyes of faith.

We serve the same God that Jonathan did. Through Christ, you are more than a conqueror. The battle has been won, your foe was defeated on the cross.

And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Colossians 2:15

Like Jonathan, the enemy may be looking down on you assuming you’re already defeated. Stand firm, my friend. We serve a mighty God who can do ALL things! All He asks of us is to have eyes of faith and a willing heart.
