Jesus in the Trials

Prophecies of The Redeemer in the book of Job

Today’s Through the Bible Reading: Job 5-9

Abbreviated Reading: Job 7

"What is man, that thou dost make so much of him, and that thou dost set Thy mind upon him" Job 7:17

This is a marvelous, humbling mystery. That God would send His only Son to die for the sin of mankind. Hebrews 12:2 tells us that Jesus endured the cross because of the joy set before Him - that joy was our redemption.

From the time Adam and Eve sinned, God promised a remedy and throughout the Old Testament gave His people reassurances of a coming Redeemer through prophecies, types, and pictures. The story and account of Job is NO exception. Throughout the book, Job references his Redeemer, a Mediator, and the who perfects.

As we dive into the discourse between Job and his 3 friends we see several great insights from the Word.

First, even though it's easy to condemn them for falsely accusing Job of sin, they did attempt to be good friends and came from far away to sit with Job. Notice that Job 2:13 says they sat with him for 7 days and 7 nights without saying a word. It was when they began to give their opinion that trouble came.

Nevertheless, the conversation between Job and his somewhat misguided friends is full of shadows, pictures, and prophecies that point to Jesus. As you read through these chapters, look for Jesus!

“So that He sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.” Job 5:11

Only Jesus sets the lowly sinner on high (Luke 19:10)! He comforts those who mourn (Matt. 5:4).

“For He bruises, but He binds up; He wounds, but His hands make whole.” Job 5:18

Jesus bruised Satan’s head as He took our sins upon Himself (Gen. 3:15; Col. 2:15). He was willingly wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities (Isa. 53:4). His hands brought healing to the sick (Luke 4:18) and He makes us whole (Col. 2:14).

“Why then do You not pardon my transgression and take away my iniquity?” Job 7:21

Indeed, Jesus Christ has pardoned our transgressions and has taken away our sins (John 1:29)! He has removed our iniquity (Rom. 3:24–26).

Even in the midst of Job-like trials, Jesus is there!
