Jesus, Prophecies Fulfilled
Today’s Through the Bible Reading: Mark 15:22-41; Matthew 27:33-56; Luke 23:33-49; John 19:17-37
And when they were come to…Calvary, there they crucified Him… Luke 23:33
In today’s Bible reading we reach Mt. Calvary, where Jesus paid the price for our sin. He bore our iniquity and carried our guilt. By His stripes we are healed (Isa 53:5). We can rejoice as we read the account of Christ’s crucifixion, because unlike other gods – Jesus conquered death. He laid down His own life, no one took it from Him (Jn 10:18). His death was a willing sacrifice.
Here’s the GOOD NEWS… Jesus died, but He rose again on the third day and reigns eternal. He is coming again, and those of us who have put our trust in Him will spend eternity with Him in heaven. Jesus said,
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on Him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24
So as we read the account of the crucifixion, we are humbled that Christ would be willing to die for us. He accomplished so much on that old rugged cross! Stop and consider what treasures you have because of His willing sacrifice.
As Jesus hung on Calvary’s cross, the prophetic shadows foretold in the Old Testament were revealed in explicit detail. Consider the prophecies describing the Messiah’s death and how perfectly Jesus bore each one.
Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be counted as a transgressor (Isa. 53:12; Matt. 27:38) and buried with the rich (Isa. 53:9; Matt. 27:57-60).
The Psalms prophesied of the vinegar Jesus would be given to drink (Ps. 69:21; Matt. 27:34, 38).
Zechariah declared His hands and feet would be pierced and that the people would gaze at Him (Zech. 12:10; Ps. 22:16; Mark 15:25; Matt. 27:36).
David spoke of His garments being torn and gambled for (Ps. 22:18; Luke 23:34), His great thirst on the cross (Ps. 22:15; John 19:28), and that none of His bones would be broken (Ps. 34:20; John 19:33-36). Jesus was God’s perfect promised fulfilled.
~ Jesus was the ram Abraham had anticipated, the Son offered as a willing sacrifice (Gen. 22:1–2, 10; Heb. 11:17–19). ~
~ Jesus was the Branch cast into the water —His cross making our bitter waters sweet (Ex. 14:13, 19–23; 1 Cor. 10:1–2).
~ Jesus is the Smitten Rock (Ex. 17:5–6; 1 Cor. 10:4) from which comes the Living Water.
~ Jesus is what the brass serpent pictured - lifted high He brings healing (Num. 21:5–9; Isa. 53:5; John 3:14–16).
~ Jesus was the perfect Lamb of God, offered as our Passover Lamb (Ex. 12; 1 Cor. 5:7). And those of us who have applied His blood have passed from death to life (John 5:24; 1 John 3:14).
Truly, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, is the promised Messiah.
