From Solomon to Jesus
Today's Through the Bible Reading: 1 Chronicles 27:1- 29:22; 1 Kings 1:1-27
Abbreviated Reading: 1 Chronicles 27 - 29
Jesus is the very essence of the Scriptures. The Old Testament points to Him and the New Testament reveals Him - and today’s reading is no exception. I hope you enjoy today’s reading. It’s taken from my new devotional Jesus, Day by Day, which is being released in September. Hope it blesses you as you look and see Jesus…
“Yet, the Lord, the God of Israel, chose me…” 1 Chronicles 28:4 nasb
Just think, the God of the entire universe, the Master Creator, looked on all of His creation and uniquely knit you together for a divine purpose. King David understood this and acknowledged God’s grace in the giving of His gifts and callings.
“…the God of Israel, chose me from all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever…and among the sons of my father He took pleasure in me to make me king over all Israel.” 1 Chronicles 28:4 nasb
In genuine humility, David recognized it was not his own efforts that made him king, but rather, it was a holy calling and solely God’s doing. Out of this humble recognition, King David spoke these words to his son Solomon.
“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him.… Consider now, for the Lord has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary; be courageous and act.” 1 Chronicles 28:9–10 nasb
We have seen how David’s life in many ways foreshadowed Christ, and as I read this passage I cannot help but think of God the Father blessing His Son Jesus and admonishing Him in the work He was given to do (Matt. 3:17l John 12:49, 17:4). Like Solomon, Jesus was chosen to build a house, a sanctuary in which God would dwell—us! We are the temple of the living God (1 Cor. 3:16), purchased by the blood of Jesus, being built up for His glory (1 Pt. 2:5).
