Canceled Debts
Today’s Through the Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 15 - 18
Abbreviated Reading: Deuteronomy 15
Because the Lord’s time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. Deuteronomy 15:2
There’s an amazing picture of God’s abundant provision for us in today’s reading. In Deuteronomy chapter 15 God instructs Israel to cancel each other’s debts at the end of every seventh year (Deut 15:1).
Here’s the beauty in this lesson, the Lord’s time for canceling our debt has been proclaimed. Jesus bore our sin on the cross! (Col 2:14) As Believers in Christ, we've been adopted and are heirs with Him (Rom 8:17). We were grafted into His family and are His people (Rom 11:17). As such, we gain the benefit of canceled debts! Our sins forgiven, offenses covered, and a life of new beginnings! Outside of Christ, the price for sin remains and the debt is still required to be paid.
Israel was only required to forgive a fellow Israelite, anyone else still had to pay off his debt. The picture here is, if someone rejects Jesus Christ and the price He paid with His own blood, there is no remedy left for that individual. They are outside of God's family and the debt of sin is remains unpaid.
Today's reading is full of treasures (wisdom), such as:
Do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward the poor. Rather be openhanded (Deut 15:7,8). Follow justice and justice alone (Deut 17:20). Do not learn to imitate the world (Deut 18:9). Remember, God redeemed you (Deut 15:15).
There’s a lot more in today’s reading, dive in and let the Spirit highlight what He wants to show you.
