Jacob’s Ladder

A picture of Jesus

Today’s Through the Bible Reading: Genesis 28:10-30:43

Abbreviated Bible Reading: Genesis 28:10-29:30

“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go…for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.” Genesis 28:15, nkjv

In today’s Bible reading, God meets Jacob. What a wonder it is that God Most High, our Creator meets with us. It's true that He answers when we call, but what amazes me is that He pursues us and instigates a relationship before we even recognize Him as God.

But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Rom 5:8

Jacob was fleeing a situation he had created by his own craftiness and trickery (stealing his brother's blessing). There were strained family relationships and Jacob found himself traveling through a unfamiliar land and sleeping on a rock as a pillow. What a good example of our own efforts when done in our own way. Our flesh will always lead us to uncomfortable situations, strained relationships, and sleepless nights.

But here is where we can give all glory to God, because He is the Great Deliverer. He calls to men and leads them in the way of life (Prov 12:28). God sees Jacob in his distress and bewildered journey and gives him a dream. Jacob saw a stairway to heaven (Gen 28:12) and heard God's promises of blessing.

We were on a bewildered journey (Eph 2:2), on a path of destruction (Matt 7:13), but God called us by name (Isa 43:1), and revealed a way to heaven through the cross of Jesus Christ (Col 1:20), whereby are given unto us great and precious promises (2 Pt 1:4).

If you need God to meet with you today, remember dear friend, it was Him who instigated a relationship with you (1 Jn 4:19). He hasn't deserted you or lost interest in the things concerning you. He died for you in order to give you life.

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee...for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. Gen 28:15

Consider the cross today, our "stairway" to heaven, and the great promises that we have through the blood of Christ. It puts everything in perspective.
