Brave Benaiah

God gives strength

Today's Through the Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 23:18–39; 2 Samuel 8:15–18

Abbreviated Reading: 2 Samuel 23:18-39

The account of the strong, fearless Benaiah in today's reading holds an encouraging truth for us today.

Benaiah...performed great exploits. He struck down Moab's two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. And he struck down a huge Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear. 2 Samuel 23:20-21 NIV

Truly God gives his people strength and victory. We know that Egypt is a picture of the world and that our enemy is likened to a roaring lion seeking who he can devour (1 Pt 5:8). Nevertheless, God gave victorious victory over both. Just like David and Goliath, Benaiah was out weaponed, out strengthened, and in a vulnerable place (in a pit). However, God used him and defeated the enemy.

When we find ourselves in a "pit", facing the giants of this world, remember God's promises and allow Him to strengthen your arms and clothe you in His armor (Ehp 6).

LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant... So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant. 2 Samuel 7:27-28 NIV

God's Word is true and His promises are trustworthy. His strength is made perfect in our weakness (2 Cor 12:9). He uses the weak of this world to show His might (1 Cor 1:27); and we are MORE than conquers through Christ who strengthens us (Rom 8:37).

Through God we shall do valiantly: for He it is that shall tread down our enemies. Psalms 108:13
