The Father’s Instructions
Today's Through the Bible Reading: Proverbs 5-7
Abbreviated Reading: Proverbs 5
“My son, attend unto my wisdom…" Proverbs 5:1
Memorizing, meditating on, delighting in, and studying God’s Word has an effect on our lives! It cleanses our minds, restores our hearts, and brings our perspectives back in line with the truth as revealed in God’s Word. We all need that and the book of Proverbs definitely delivers.
The book of Proverbs can be divided into six parts: 1) chapters 1-7 speak to us as the sons of God; 2) chapters 8-9 praise wisdom; 3) chapters 10-19 describe the deceitfulness of sin; 4) chapters 20-29 warn and instruct those seeking wisdom; 5) chapter 30 is simply titled, the words of Agur, and 6) chapter 31 sings the praise of a virtuous woman.
Today’s reading contains those chapters addressed to sons. As if to say, “Listen up, kids,” God is giving us lessons for life like protecting our hearts, our homes, and the value of hard work.
“My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.” Proverbs 5:1-2
These are our heavenly Father’s words of encouragement, instruction, and wisdom to us, His children. He tells us to take them seriously, to hide them in our heart, to hold them close, and to treasure their content.
“Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck...they will lead you; When you sleep, they will keep you; And when you awake, they will speak with you. For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life" Proverbs 6:21-23
May you look into God’s Word today and see Jesus. Hold Him close, bind His instructions around your heart as though they were reins set firmly in place to guide your steps.
