Treasure
Today's Through the Bible Reading: Proverbs 22 - 24
“A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver and gold.” Proverbs 22:1
What would it be like to be the richest person in the world? Where would you go, what would you do? Well, King Solomon knew a thing or two about riches. Israel’s greatest wealth and grandeur took place during Solomon’s reign. Solomon was the richest man who had ever lived up to that point in history, collecting over twenty-five tons of gold each year (1 Kings 10:23; 2 Chron. 9:22).
“Every year King Solomon received over twenty-five tons of gold, in addition to the taxes paid by the traders and merchants…” 2 Chronicles 9:13-14 GNT
But Solomon, having experienced the grandeur of incalculable amounts of gold and extravagance, said something oh, so profound when he said a good name is more valuable than a ton (quite literally) of treasure.
You see, Solomon, through his own experience, understood the deceptiveness of riches and their inherent instability. He knew that his earthly treasures were temporary.
“Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.” Proverbs 23:5 NIV
We see this same principal propounded in the New Testament by our Lord. He told us not to strive for earthly treasures, but rather, to store up treasures in heaven.
“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:20-21
There is a heavenly storehouse that we can make deposits to and pay it forward for ourselves for all of eternity! So turn your attention to your eternal destination and seek the things of His Kingdom, as seen in His Word – for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
