Who Will Pay the Ransom?

Today's Through the Bible Reading: Psalm 49, 83, 91; 2 Kings 1

“For the redemption of their life is costly…That he should continue to live eternally, And not see death.” Psalm 49:8, 9 NKJV

Jesus is the very essence of the Scriptures. The Old Testament points to Him and the New Testament reveals Him. He can be found on every page and in every story. If we look for Him, we will find Him. Psalm 49:8-9 is one of those amazing Old Testament passages that speaks directly of the costly sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

The Psalmist was well aware of his sinful condition and knew of his need for redemption.

Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Psalm 51:2-3

The Old Testament saints relied on sacrifices to atone for sin (Lev. 16:15). But as you know, these sacrifices were but a shadow of the ultimate sacrifice that would cover over all sin, for all time.

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; Romans 3:25

As New Testament Believers, we look to Jesus, the one who redeemed our life by way of a costly sacrifice – all so we could live with Him eternally. We owed a debt we could not pay (Rom. 6:18-20). But God, who loves us, sent His only Son to die for us.

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. John 10:28

Jesus, your Redeemer, paid your debt. My encouragement to you today is to read today’s reading and just see Jesus - remembering the price He paid and rejoicing in His gift of salvation.
