Our Great High Priest

Aaron, a Picture of Jesus

Today's Through the Bible Reading: Exodus 28-29

Abbreviated Reading: Exodus 28

“And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place.” Exodus 28:29

God appointed Aaron to serve Israel as their high priest, a mediator between the people and God. The intricacies of Aaron’s high priestly ministry perfectly pictured our Great High Priest, Jesus, the final and ultimate mediator between God and man.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” 1 Timothy 2:5

In Exodus 28, God gave Moses instructions regarding the breastplate that Aaron was to wear. The names of the twelve tribes of Israel were engraved on this breastplate, so that every time Aaron went into the holy place, he wore those names on his heart and brought them into the very presence of the Lord.

Jesus, our Great High Priest, now stands in the holy place, in the presence of God Almighty as our mediator. He continually intercedes on our behalf (Heb. 7:25), and as He does, He bears our names.

“Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands…” Isaiah 49:16

Jesus has written your name on His hands and you are on His heart, my friend. You are the joy that caused Him to endure the cross (Heb. 12:2). Just as Aaron the high priest continually interceded for Israel before Christ came, Jesus the Great High Priest now lives to ever make intercession for us (Heb. 7:25).

God calls us a chosen people, a nation of kings and priests (1 Pt 2:9; Rev 5:10). As we walk with the Lord, our hearts are being sanctified (set apart) and we look to our Great High Priest, Jesus (Heb 4:14), who was completely perfect and the perfecter of us. As the Great High Priest, Jesus is our mediator and presented Himself, the perfect sacrifice for our sins (1 Pt 3:18).

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

Through Jesus Christ we can enter into God’s presence and have fellowship with Him. (Heb 4:16). Oh what a Savior!
