Last Words for the Last Days
Today’s devotional is an excerpt from Jesus, Day by Day - enjoy!
Today’s Through the Bible Reading: 2 Timothy 2-4
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. 2 Timothy 3:17
As Paul wrote this second letter to Timothy, his son in the faith, the apostle was in prison, awaiting his death sentence. In his final words Paul told Timothy to watch and be ready for the last days (2 Tim. 3:1–13) when men will be self-lovers, money lovers, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, profane, without natural affections, promise breakers, false accusers, without self-control, savage, despisers of good, betrayers, reckless, high minded, lovers of pleasure, religious without knowing Christ, knowledgeable without wisdom, sorcerers, deceivers, and deceived.
What a dismal situation! Yet I think you’ll agree that Paul’s description of the last days aptly captures the world in which you and I are living. I am thankful that Paul did not simply itemize the problems but specifically gave Timothy the remedy: Jesus!
Continue in the things that you have learned…the sacred writings (Hebrew Scriptures) which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus [surrendering your entire self to Him and having absolute confidence in His wisdom, power and goodness]. All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; so that the man of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Tim. 3:14–17, AMP)
Jesus is the cure the world so desperately needs. So keep reading His Word, for all Scripture points to Him (John 5:39; Luke 24:27, 44). Keep obeying what He says (John 17:17), and keep sharing Jesus with the world around you.
