God Knows Your Name
A Genealogy that Points to Jesus
“This is the document containing the family records of Adam. On the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God;” Genesis 5:1 CSB
We serve a God who breathes life into the mundane. He takes the “ordinary” and makes it extraordinary. When touched by Jesus, what was once becomes a reflection of His glory. Today’s reading is a great example. What appears to be an insignificant list of names becomes a masterpiece of intent and design when we look and see a picture of Jesus Himself.
In Genesis 5 we find the first genealogy, listing the descendants of Adam. You see, my friend, God is a God of details, and right here in the middle of a genealogy, He omnisciently orchestrates a glimpse of His plan of redemption - right from the very beginning.
Consider the Hebrew meaning of the names listed in Genesis 5:3–29:
·Adam = Man[i]
·Seth = Appointed[ii]
·Enosh = Mortal[iii]
·Kenan = Possession or possesses[iv]
·Mahalalel = Praise of God[v]
·Jared = Descend or come down[vi]
·Enoch = Dedicated or to train[vii]
·Methuselah = Men or friends[viii]
·Lamech = Powerful [ix]
·Noah = Rest [x]
And so it reads…
Man, although appointed mortal, through God’s grace, possesses the Praise of God, who is His Son, Jesus Christ (2 Pt. 1:17; Col. 2:9; Matt. 3:17; Heb. 1:3, 2:9; John 14:7-9, 17:24), who descended and came down. He was dedicated to train men (Lk. 4:23; Matt. 7:29; John 7:16), His friends (John 15:13-15) powerful rest.
Truly, Jesus did come to teach us REST!
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
Truly history is His-Story and no detail is a mistake – even a list of names.
Just like God knew the names of the people listed here in Genesis 5, He knows your name too! Not only does God know your name, but you bear His name – the name above EVERY name.
What a sweet relationship, to know and be known by our Lord. Remember this precious, priceless, powerful truth today: He knows your name!
